Presentations

This section contains information and links related to the technology transfer profession.  Over the years, we have compiled a number of Powerpoint presentations that covering intellectual property and other topics of interest to tech transfer professionals.

Operating Manual

We have compiled an extensive operating manual.  We began this project over a year ago in an effort to standardize and make our processes more transparent to UVA faculty, and to provide more uniform processing and record-keeping.  The final product provides a roadmap for how we evaluate, market, and license inventions.
An abridged version of the manual is available for download and the unabridged manual is available for purchase by universities and not-for-profit research institutions.  It is 190 pages long and contains an extensive set of evaluation forms, checklists, market analysis documents, and data recordation forms that were custom developed as part of this project. It also contains copies of form letters and model agreements that we currently use.

   UVAPF Business Model

This excerpt from the 2006 edition of the Technology Transfer Manual of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) describes the "deal-based" business model that the Patent Foundation has been using since 1997.

  Faculty Entrepreneur Guidebook

This guidebook helps explain long-standing UVA policies and procedures as they are applied in the area of faculty entrepreneurship with the twin goals of facilitating the development of new technology companies while preserving the unique nature of the UVA academic research enterprise.

  Technology Licensing Guidebook

This guidebook is a collaborative effort between the Patent Foundation and local law firm Williams Mullen to provide a basic overview of such licenses to those not previously involved in licensing-what issues each party considers important during license negotiations, how those issues are balanced, and how the agreed-upon balance is memorialized in a written contract.
