Resources for Inventors
The UVA Patent Foundation is proud to serve the University of Virginia in many significant ways. Our most important role is to provide professional support services to the UVA faculty and staff. Although those on the outside might think faculty simply "pass the baton" to us when they disclose their inventions, this is not at all the case. To the contrary, we actively encourage faculty to stay involved in determining the fate of their inventions. Active collaboration between the Patent Foundation and UVA inventors is the heart of what we are about, and it is the source of all of our success.
In order to provide more transparency into what we do at the Patent Foundation, we have created an Operating Manual which describes all the steps that are involved in our process. It is a roadmap for how we evaluate, market and license inventions. For a quick overview of the Patent Foundation's processes, click on the bubble "Flow Diagram: How It Works" in the upper left corner of this page.
To provide assistance to faculty who have an interest in forming their own business around their technology, the Patent Foundation founded its for-profit subsidiary, Spinner Technologies. For more information on Spinner, please visit their website at www.spinnertech.com.
Please refer to the menu on the left of your screen for further information on inventorship, guidelines and instructions, disclosing your inventions and other frequently asked questions.
